Jack Zhang

Software Engineer

I build products end-to-end: from infrastructure and APIs to distributed systems and cloud services. Currently at Amazon building supply chain optimization systems.

About

Welcome, and thanks for visiting my personal portfolio! I designed, developed, and deployed this site from scratch to showcase my work. I'm currently a software engineer at Amazon with a focus on distributed systems and backend infrastructure. I grew up with a passion for technology and problem-solving, which naturally led me to pursue software engineering. I graduated from Vanderbilt University with degrees in Computer Science and Economics.

At Amazon, I work with the Supply Chain Optimization Technologies organization to build data pipelines, internal tools, and backend services that power real-time procurement decisions. The role gave me early exposure to shipping production software in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. This role taught me how to collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to build things that actually get used.

In my own time, I enjoy building full-stack systems that solve real problems. I’m drawn to designing systems that are reliable, well-structured, and able to grow as they’re used. I’m especially interested in how AI is beginning to shape everyday software workflows and how it will change the way products are built. Along the way, I try to stay curious, communicate clearly, and turn ideas into working software.

Outside of work, I spend most of my time trying new restaurants with friends using Beli, playing chess and table tennis, and tutoring students in math. I'm also a huge fan of traveling to new countries to try their cuisine and immerse myself in their culture. Please don't hesitate to reach out for any inquiries or opportunities!

Aug 2024 – Present

  • Drove development and optimization of 15+ backend APIs in Java on AWS that compute network topology and shipping cost estimates, enabling real-time procurement and inventory allocation across 600M+ product listings
  • Automated region data synchronization across services by driving design alignment with cross-team senior engineers, eliminating manual workflows, saving 4+ engineering hours per week, and reducing production release errors by 70%
  • Led production rollout of a new fulfillment center workflow across 50 warehouses, expanding network throughput by 80M+ inventory units per year through integration testing, A/B testing, and cross-team simulations
  • Authored an Operational Readiness Review, identifying and driving 15 improvements including request throttling and horizontal scaling optimizations, reducing operational incidents by 30%
  • Designed and deployed service health monitoring using AWS CDK and CloudFormation (IaC), building dashboards, alarms, and metrics to track latency, error rates, and downstream dependency health
  • Mitigated 80+ high-severity production incidents and resolved 800+ operational tickets by debugging distributed services using CloudWatch metrics and logs
